KEEP MOVING ON

May 2010 election has come and gone leaving a paper trail where it came around. Piles and piles of campaign materials made of tarpaulins and paper were taken down from the common poster areas while those hanging along the highways were still flying high and proud. Oh, the smiling faces of the candidates on the posters pasted on tree trunks were just as radiant as
if they’d won the race.

During the campaign period, we have observed that always the candidates shouted for a change for the better. Several of them made beautification and ‘a clean environment’ drives their come on for a vote. Where are they now? Some claimed to be advocates of the ‘cleaning and greening’ of the planet. We clapped our hands for their noble goals then. Where are these honorable men now?

Today, when you drive around the highways and look about the trees along the road you’ll notice that the leaves supposedly green are peppered with other colors with names or pictures in it.  “Wow, do they own the trees that bear their names and pictures?” asked a grandnephew yesterday. Of course they don’t and the mom explained why. “Oh, will it strangle the Mr. Big Trees then?” he persisted.

These are childish questions that may sound funny but it has a grain of truth in it. Steel nails embedded in the tree trunks or its branches may have harmful effects on them but not enough to kill the tree; however, if the candidates have done away with the nails and the very concentrated paste the campaign materials would have been taken off the fences and light posts easily. Obviously, the pasting, hanging and nailing of their campaign posters have eaten up a good budget. It’s sad to note though that no fund is apparently set aside by the candidates for cleaning the area. Tsk! Tsk!

Winning candidates are still riding high in euphoria with their supporters. I hope that as they ride through the crest of triumph they’ll remember too that much is expected of them by their constituents. That is not to mention yet the promises they made. On the other hand, those on the losing end may be rising and tossing in bed assessing their weakness, which leader turned against them, and (my goodness) how much was it they did spend. My good friend said some candidates have to sleep face down or else they’d think, think, and think endlessly…and not rest at all.

The ladies and the gentlemen from the aspiring public servants who failed have conceded earlier and without further ado but the sore losers still gripe and make believe that they were tricked into losing the battle. Too bad!

It’s so human to feel the joys of victory or the pains of defeat; however, normal beings know when to return to earth and start living normally again. I hope, all the bickering and word war will stop soon after.  The Filipino as a nation has shown mellowness in the election process. Can’t the people who aspired to lead show more maturity?

A former farm helper said to me, “Let’s plant while every man in the neighborhood is still enthusiastic about planting lest we be last and our crops will be feeds for the mice.” Hahaha! In short, let’s keep moving on… on to progress!
